Mohamed Hassan

Mohamed Hassan is a Somali researcher with lived experience of displacement based in Nairobi, Kenya. He spent over two decades in Kakuma refugee camp where he was elected as a zonal chairperson to represent the needs and interests of fellow refugees. Throughout various leadership roles, Mohamed has been an advocate for refugee rights and inclusion, speaking at international conferences, including co-chairing the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos in 2019. He was also the first refugee to work as a UN Volunteer in East and Sub-Saharan Africa.

Mohamed’s research interests focus on the evolution of identity in protracted displacement, intergenerational displacement, and the limits of durable solutions. He is a graduate of Princeton University’s Global History Lab and OSUN’s Oral History Literature programme. He has conduced research on oral history, refugee leadership, and self-reliance.
