There is strong evidence that displacement takes a toll on refugees’ psychological and mental health, from the events leading up to displacement, during transit, and conditions in settlement. More needs to be done to address this widespread problem in a context-specific and culturally sensitive manner. In this working paper, Lonah Akot Olweny provides evidence on coping mechanisms and existing support in the Palabek Refugee Settlement in Northern Uganda, to help stakeholders design appropriate programmes at the local level.
