Ghana has an open legal environment where refugees have the same rights as Ghanaian nationals. Refugees move freely, have the right to work, own businesses, and own properties. As of September 2024, Ghana hosts around 12,200 registered refugees and asylum seekers, the majority of whom live in urban areas, particularly in and around Accra. Despite this favourable legal environment, refugees face practical challenges in accessing formal employment and business registration, including structural barriers and limited awareness among employers of refugees’ legal rights to work.
